How Ranked Choice Voting Works and Why You Should Fill All 5

Make Your Voice Count in Every Round

In NYC’s primary for Mayor, you can rank up to five candidates in order of preference. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) gives you more power, but only if you use it. FILL ALL 5!

Step-by-Step: How RCV Works

  • Rank up to 5 candidates in order of preference — 1st choice through 5th.

  • If any candidate gets over 50% in the first round, that candidate wins, and the election is over.

  • If no one reaches that majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.

  • Voters who picked that candidate will have their next choice counted instead.

  • This process continues until one candidate has a majority.

Why You Should Fill All 5

  • Ranking more candidates gives you more influence. Think of RCV as multiple rounds of voting. If you only rank 1 or 2, your ballot might not count in later rounds.

  • Ranking others does not weaken your first-choice candidate. Your next choices are only counted if your higher choices are eliminated.

  • Filling in all 5 ensures your voice is heard for as long as possible in the process.

  • You cannot rank the same candidate more than once; if you do, only your first choice will count, and the rest of your rankings not be counted.

Fill All 5: Brad Lander + Additional Mayoral Candidates to Consider

VID has endorsed candidates in every NYC municipal race. For the full list of our endorsed candidates, click here.

VID has not endorsed a full slate of mayoral candidates under Ranked Choice Voting. We have endorsed Brad Lander for Mayor and strongly encourage membership to rank him as your #1 choice.

While we encourage members to use all five ranking options, we trust our members to exercise their good judgment and do their own research when ranking the remaining four candidates.
