More Judges for NY Civil and Family Court

Sep 05, 2024

On July 17, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation S.9839/A.10540 to address case backlogs in New York's family and civil courts by increasing the number of judges statewide by 28. This includes two new judges each for Nassau and Suffolk counties, one additional judge for several other counties, and 16 new judges for New York City, to be distributed across the five boroughs. Manhattan will have 3 additional judges who will appear on the November ballot. The legislation aims to reduce delays and improve the court system's efficiency, addressing critical gaps impacting the timely delivery of justice. Chief Judge Rowan Wilson and State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal praised the new law for enhancing resources and ensuring fair treatment in family courts, while Assemblymember Landon C. Dais highlighted its importance in bridging the gap in judicial resources and expediting proceedings for vulnerable families. Full press release here.
