Brad Lander Detained by ICE Defending Due Process

Last week, VID-endorsed mayoral candidate Brad Lander was detained by masked federal agents while escorting a man who was lawfully appearing for his scheduled immigration court hearing at 26 Federal Plaza. Lander has made multiple visits to bear witness and stand with vulnerable New Yorkers targeted by Trump’s ICE, and was demanding to see a judicial warrant when agents handcuffed and detained him. He was later released without charges following widespread outcry and a rally outside the courthouse.

Speaking to supporters, Lander said: “I know I will get due process and that my rights will be protected. But Edgardo will sleep in an ICE detention facility, God knows where, tonight… He has been stripped of his due process rights in a country that is supposed to be founded on equal justice under law.” As Lander put it, the job of a mayor is not to posture but to “show up and protect people.”  Full article here.

Protesting the Anti-Trans SCOTUS Ruling

In response to the Supreme Court’s devastating ruling upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth, VID members joined Manhattan Borough President, Mark Levine, NYS Senator Brad Holyman-Sigal, NYS Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, NYC Councilmember Erik Bottcher and NYC Councilmember Crystal Hudson to protest in Union Square.

Earth Day Rally for NY HEAT

On Tuesday, April 22, VID members joined climate activists at City Hall to rally for the NY HEAT Act—New York’s top climate priority. Special thanks to Nat Johnson and the VID Environmental Committee for their leadership in this critical effort. Speakers included lead sponsors State Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, along with other elected officials and guests.

Team Levine and VID in the West Village

This Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, VID was out in Abingdon Square with Mark Levine, our endorsed candidate for NYC Comptroller. On April 22, almost 1,000 people attended Rep. Dan Goldman's town hall to hear concerns from NY-10 constituents, answer questions and explain the ways in which he is working in the halls of Congress and on the streets to combat Trump 2.0's radical and devastating agenda.

March 2025

Death by 1,000 Musk Cuts:  ACT UP and NYC Joined the Global Tesla Takedown. As part of Saturday’s weekly Tesla Takedown, nonviolent protests were held in over 250 cities worldwide, targeting Elon Musk’s deepening influence in the Trump administration and his role in dismantling democratic institutions and public health infrastructure.

Over 1,000 people joined ACT UP in New York City for a powerful rally, march, and die-in, marking the group’s 38th anniversary. Protesters called out the devastating impact of Trump, Musk, and RFK Jr.'s cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, PEPFAR, USAID, and vital public health agencies. The march—from the AIDS Memorial to the Tesla Showroom—demanded accountability for policies that threaten millions of lives.

This isn’t just about Tesla—it’s about resisting authoritarianism, protecting healthcare, and defending our democracy. Join TeslaTakedown.org for updates and upcoming protests.

Stop the Cuts March
VID and thousands of protesters took to the streets this weekend to demand Washington politicians do more to stop the Trump administration’s continued job cuts to vital programs and services including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Approximately 7 million New York state residents rely on Medicaid.

Astroturf follow up
VID along with Grand Street Dems and a coalition of environmental/park advocates protested at City Hall last week in support of Councilmember Christopher Marte introducing his bill to ban Astroturf in NYC parks. Astroturf is hazardous to humans and animals. It produces toxic microplastics.  New Yorkers deserve parks with real grass!
